Black Mountains Trek

Black Mountains Trek

If it’s to get fit while enjoying the beautiful landscape we have close to home, then the Black Mountains Trek might just be for you.

The 30-kilometre walk takes in some of the most dramatic scenery for miles around.

Starting at Longtown Outdoor Learning Centre, the route takes walkers up onto Hatterrall Hill before crossing the Vale of Ewyas to head north along the prominent central ridge of the Black Mountains with superb views across the Brecon Beacons National Park.

After passing the day’s high point at Chwarel y Fan (670m) you will re-cross the Vale of Ewyas at Capel-y-Ffin before returning to Longtown via Hatterrall Ridge and descending the zig zag path within sight of the impressive Black Darren.

At the finish in Longtown Education Centre, a two-course meal will be waiting, along with a Black Mountains Trek medal.

The trek will set off with rolling start from 8am and walkers will need to have their own equipment (see conditions of entry download on this page for the required list). To meet this challenge, you will need good navigation and hill skills.

The walk is challenging and will be marshalled by the Longtown Mountain Rescue Team, with funds raised going to St Michael’s Hospice.

ll walkers will receive tea/coffee and snacks on arrival.

Previously, this walk has sold out so book early to avoid disappointment.
