Concert: The Engegard Quartet at Hellens Manor
Hellens is delighted to welcome this superb string quartet for a concert in the Great Barn on Saturday 30 September at 7.30pm.
Formed under the midnight sun in Lofoten in 2005, the Engegård Quartet have rapidly become one of Norway’s most sought-after ensembles. Their bold, fresh interpretations of the classical repertoire, combined with a deep attachment to their Scandinavian roots, has attracted international acclaim and inspired some innovative partnerships and programming. The Quartet’s debut CD was praised as ‘breath-taking’ in The Strad, while their second release won Pizzicato magazine’s ‘Supersonic Award’. Recent CD releases include Mozart’s ‘Prussian Quartets’ and the complete string quartets of Schumann. Such is their stature that they have performed with such world-famous musicians as pianists Sir András Schiff and Leif Ove Andsnes.
Programme:
Haydn – String Quartet in B flat Op 76 No 4 (‘Sunrise’)
Bartok – String Quartet No 3
Beethoven – String Quartet in C Op 59 No 3 (‘Razumovsky’)
The concert comprises three outstanding string quartets: the most genial 4th Quartet from Haydn’s magnificent Op 76 set; the String Quartet No 3 of Bartok, a 15-minute mini-drama dating from 1927, revolutionary for its time; and the 3rd of Beethoven’s ground-breaking ‘Razumovsky’ Quartets, acknowledged to be one of the greatest of all chamber works.
